WHITELINES REVIEW: The Millisurf

Combining the pumped-up centrifugal shape of the Surfari with the superlight construction of the Milligram seems like a bit of an unusual mix at first. Amplid have taken inspiration from opposite ends of the snowboarding spectrum and the Millisurf is the fusion of these ideas. It’s the ‘Usain Bolt meets Paula Radcliffe’ of splitboards. Power and style meets lightweight endurance. Effortless steeze meets shit-your-pants levels of adrenaline.

So first the ‘Milli’, we’ll get to the ‘Surf’ later. A good percentage of that cost comes down to the incredibly lightweight construction. The BBP Core is Amplid’s gram shaving layup of paulownia, balsa and birch. Further weight savings are made in the tips where some sections have been altogether replaced with a recycled paper honeycomb structure, known as HEXO2 Lite. Combined with the Full Carbon Jacket, which replaces conventional fibreglass layups with the lightest and most performant that money can buy, you maintain a responsive and playful flex pattern at a mere fraction of the weight.

All that gram counting can come undone on days when the temperature fluctuates and leads to a build-up of snow on the topsheet of your split. Amplid’s Stratospheric technology helps to reduce the amount of UV absorbed by up to 51% and drastically limits the chances of heavy skis that require you to spend half your day scraping away at the excess bulk. These particles sit under a unique Nano Film topsheet which offers ample protection but at a reduced weight of up to 50% less than conventional topsheets.

And as for the ‘Surf’? Well, there’s no point in being first to the top every time if you don’t have the right steed to gallop back downhill with. The Millisurf prioritises stoke-inducing descents as much as lightning-fast ascents with a super directional, fishtailed shape and a long rockered profile and subtle 3D bevelling in the nose. Point it straight or line up every windlip and slash on the way down – it’s all very much on the cards for this one.

Boards like these don’t come cheap and if you’re looking for a more affordable trip into the backcountry (and not fussed about being the first to the summit) you might be better suited to the bombproof construction of the Surf Shuttle split instead. For those who want the absolute best and have a good enough credit score to back them up – here lies your new split.
