Day Trips - Late May in the Karwendel Alps

When his work's done, Amplid's graphics guru, Michi Hanauer takes every opportunity to get out there on his Millsurf and clock some kilometres on his skins. Ordinarily, if you want to go snowboarding in late May in the Northern Alps, it probably won’t happen much below 3000m. But last winter was special, and so there’s still plenty of low hanging fruit in Amplid’s back yard.

On Thursday the 28th of May, Michi and a couple of buddies dipped into Austria for the Hochglückkar tour, a spring classic. The tour started from Eng at 1200m at 7am. At first hiking and then touring into the stark, limestone peaks of the Karwendel Alps, an unseasonably low snowline meant that climbing to just 2200m was enough vertical to secure plenty of fresh turns on the way down. It's hard to beat getting home for lunch after a morning hiking lines!
